In France, a 61-year-old woman’s decision to dye her hair at home has cost her dearly. She is at risk of losing her sight.

It is reported that a few days after the procedure, the woman had vision problems. When she saw that she was almost blind, she went to the hospital. During the analysis it was determined that the hair dye was the cause of the blindness. Paraphenylenediamine in the paint caused the development of retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels that feed the light-sensitive tissue of the eye). If the woman had applied a little later, the blindness could have been irreversible.
According to scientists, paraphenylenediamine is often used in hair dyes (especially in dark colors). The chemical likely entered the bloodstream through microdamages in the scalp and interfered with chemical reactions that protect the health of eye cells.
Doctors explain this as a rare manifestation of allergy to the paint component. Typically, such side effects occur when instructions are not followed and when an excessive amount of the ingredient is used.
Fortunately, the victim’s vision was fully restored within four months.
The results of the study were published in the journal “JAMA Ophthalmology.” Scientists recommend caution when using paints containing paraphenylenediamine and strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid health risks.
