“Benyamin Netanyahu has no long-term plan beyond his own survival”

qWhen we look at the situation in Israel, we can say that the pessimists were right. After such a difficult year, can we not admit that the Israeli right, which alerted us to what the enemy’s true objective was, was telling the truth? The cruelty of the events of October 7, 2023 leaves no doubt: Hamas’s objective was not to end the occupation but to unleash a total war of annihilation of Israel.

It is also clear that Hezbollah, which could not claim an Israeli occupation of Lebanon, was preparing the ground for Iran’s apocalyptic goals. Today, the West Bank is also engulfed in turmoil at a worrying rate. Entire regions of Israel have become desert territories. Militias from countries like Yemen are launching missiles and drones into our cities. Hamas men remain locked in their tunnels with their hostages, holding them in inhumane conditions. And the country overseeing this chaotic symphony is Iran, which continues to call for the destruction of Israel. Isn’t it fair to admit that the right predicted it?

However, one fundamental thing means that pessimists are always wrong: pessimism is not an objective view of reality; It is an expression of fear that blocks progress. When pessimism takes hold, a grim reality becomes almost inevitable. It is no coincidence that the most right-wing – and most pessimistic – government in the history of Israel is responsible for the greatest disaster that the Jewish people have suffered since the Holocaust.

Shattered society

A year after the events of October 7, neither the end of the war nor the prospect of a ceasefire, much less a diplomatic solution, seem in sight. Without a doubt, Israel has managed to weaken Hamas and attack Hezbollah. But after October 7, public opinion expected the government to assume its responsibility and leave its place. This is not the case: the Prime Minister refuses to admit his failure, prevents the creation of a commission of inquiry into October 7 and shows himself incapable of restoring the trust of the citizens.

Despite the resilience shown by the latter, Netanyahu’s weakness is striking in its obviousness. He has no long-term plan beyond his own survival. He asks to be allowed to reach a “total victory”but no one knows what it will be like. It postpones the return of the hostages, although most Israelis consider this goal crucial. His coalition is failing on all fronts: the country’s economy is faltering, national security and everyone’s security have never been more compromised, and displaced families are unable to return to their homes. Ultra-Orthodox groups persist in claiming particularist privileges [dont celui d’éviter le service militaire] while the soldiers sacrifice themselves.
