Bernard Cazeneuve, favourite to re-elected as French Prime Minister

The French President, Emmanuel Macronwill receive the leaders on Monday François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozyin addition to the former prime minister Bernard Cazeneuvewho is presented as the most likely option to lead a new government.

Macron will hold these meetings as part of the meetings he has been organizing for just over a week with political parties and personalities, in order to find a candidate to occupy the Matignon palace with sufficient parliamentary support.

The meetings with the conservative Sarkozy and the socialist Hollande were not officially announced by the Elysée, but were confirmed to the public channel Franceinfo by the entourage of the two former presidents. They will take place Monday morning, as will the meeting with Cazeneuve, also confirmed by the entourage of the former socialist prime minister.

The candidacy of the 61-year-old politician and lawyer emerged with force after Macron ruled out nominating the candidate proposed by the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition, Lucie Castets.

The former Prime Minister of Hollande (2016-2017) is, according to leaks from the Elysée to the press, the only personality considered capable of avoid “a majority against” in the French National Assemblydeeply divided in the last elections, won by the NFP.

But an appointment of Cazeneuve, left-wing but who left the Socialist Party (PS) in 2022 to protest against his alliances with the most radical formation of the party, Jean-Luc MélenchonLa France Insoumise (LFI) threatens to generate a real tremor on the left and a break-up of the NFP.
