The Junta de Castilla y León will contribute 1.6 million euros for the works of the Zamora food market, which will have a total cost of around five million for its complete rehabilitation and that of its surroundings to make it “a more comfortable structure”, functional, sustainable and modern”, which will mean “a boost for the old town of Zamora and, in turn, an economic engine and commercial hub for the city”.
This was highlighted yesterday by the regional president, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, who traveled to the capital of Zamora to meet the mayor, Francisco Guarido, and visit some of the works already underway in the building designed in 1902 by the Architect Benaventano Segundo Viloria and confirm the involvement of the leading institution in the financing of the project. Mañueco explained that During yesterday’s Government Council, the contribution of the first 800,000 euros was approved for the works and emphasized that, already in 2025, a similar amount will be incorporated. He also highlighted “the collaboration with the Zamora City Hall”, which “highlights the desire for dialogue between all, which is what citizens are looking for”. they expect from those of us who have public responsibilities”, he underlined before insisting on his “pride” in “contributing” to the market, “while preserving its essence, by becoming a more accessible infrastructure “.
Before Mañueco’s intervention, Guarido had retraced the history of this work which had been on the table for almost twenty years in the city. The mayor stressed that it was he who managed to “ring the cat” in 2016 and who decided to undertake certain works which must be completed in 2026 and which also included the setting up of a temporary market so that the stands do not stop operating during these two years.
Guarido also thanked the regional government of Castilla y León for its collaboration in financing the works and praised the work of the current advisor for economic promotion, David Gago, and his predecessor in this area, Christoph Strieder. All during an event organized in the plenary hall of the Zamora City Hall and in which the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment, Leticia García, of Zamora was also present.
Beyond the work of the market as such, Mañueco defended local commerce as “a benchmark of quality and service, which generates more than 75,000 direct jobs in Castile and León” and to which this year it allocates more than 10 million euros in investment in municipalities and supply markets and support for the modernization and digitalization of the sector, reports Ep.
On the other hand, the President of the Council reaffirmed his commitment to Zamora “to create opportunities in the territory”, through investments aimed at different projects, such as the Zamora Norte Industrial Park in Monfarracinos, the new residence for the elderly; and the Aldehuela HUB, among others.
