Nearly three million Americans contributed more than $200 million to the Democratic candidate’s campaign last month. In every poll, Kamala Harris ranked first in the preferences of every possible group of voters except one: white Christian men. The Democratic convention, which began under the heavy shadow of the memory of the violent incidents of 1968 and an eerie parallel between the Vietnam War and the Gaza genocide, ended with critical and public acclaim and dozens of minutes and clips for TikTok and Instagram.
The wine and roses days of the Democratic summer seem to have no end after the long, dark winter days of discontent and Joe Biden’s faltering candidacy. Democrats and their candidate would do well to keep in mind that after so much euphoria, there usually comes an inevitable downturn that can end in a severe hangover if not managed with patience and resilience.
