The issue became a key theme during his visit to Israel just days after the tragic events of October 7, when he reaffirmed US support for Israel and warned against possible mistakes. Administration officials insist they will not give up. They stress that they cannot do this while rockets continue to cause “death and destruction in northern Israel and southern Lebanon.”
They remain hopeful that the current level of rocket attacks will not lead to the regional war they are trying to avoid. Biden is especially hopeful that his successor will support a groundbreaking deal in which Saudi Arabia recognizes Israel and Israel agrees to a two-state plan.
