The Brazilian João Marinho Neto, 112 years and 52 dayswas named this Thursday “the oldest living man in the world” by the Guinness Book of Records. This appointment comes after the death of Briton John Alfred Tinniswood, who held this brand, on Monday at the age of 112, in England. João, born in the state of Ceará on October 5, 1912, was already recognized as the oldest man in Brazil and Latin America.
On the official Guinness Book website, João said that the secret of his long life lies in “stay surrounded by good people and loved ones”. He was born into a farming family, and by the age of 4 he was already helping his father in the fields, tending to the livestock and harvesting fruit. He was married twice and had seven children, four in his first marriage and three in his second. Now counts 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The oldest living man on record was the Japanese Jiroemon Kimura (1897–2013), who lived until 116 years old.
