A serious incident occurred in Johannesburg involving a British Airways pilot who was suspended after attacking three flight attendants. The incident became known on Tuesday 10 September and was described in detail in The Sun.
The 50-year-old pilot, a married father of two, was going to a bar while relaxing between flights, taking along his 25-year-old mistress, whom he had brought to South Africa on a discounted ticket. At the bar, the pilot drank heavily and got into an argument with his mistress. Upon returning to the Marriott hotel, he went to the hotel bar, where he met three flight attendants from his crew. In a state of severe alcohol intoxication, he began to fight with them.
According to the British publication, the pilot could barely stand and had to be escorted to his room by hotel security. The next day, the crew refused to fly with him and the pilot had to return to the UK on another flight as a regular passenger. A British Airways spokesman said the crew member had been suspended pending an investigation.
The Sun also noted that Johannesburg is known as a party hub for airline crews. Another incident occurred in this city in January 2024 when a pilot from another airline was kidnapped by robbers and tortured.
