In the UMP and then in LR, Bruno Retailleau was long seen as an extra, a distant cousin from the country, before winning the trust of François Fillon and embodying the conservative wing of the party, that of Manif pour all. Opposed to gay marriage, the Vendéens also voted in March against the constitutionalisation of abortion.
