Bundestag to consider resolution against US missile deployment in Germany

The parliamentary group of the left-wing party in the Bundestag will present a resolution for consideration on Thursday, October 10, demanding to prevent plans to deploy US medium-range missiles in Germany, according to the official website of the German legislative body.

“No to the deployment of medium-range missiles in Germany,” reads the title of the parliamentary group’s initiative.

After a debate that will last approximately half an hour, the resolution will be submitted for discussion in the competent parliamentary committees, in particular in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag, as well as in the Defense Committee.

“The deployment of American intermediate-range missiles in Germany will have unpredictable consequences for the arms control system, as well as for arms limitation policies in Europe. “This step will forever change the strategic balance between the United States and Russia.” – noted in the document.

The authors of the resolution also highlight that, unlike the so-called “twin solution” of NATO adopted in 1979 on the issue of “Euromissiles”, the bilateral declaration of the governments of Germany and the United States, made outside the The NATO summit to be held in Washington in July does not contain any proposals for dialogue with Russia. Thus, the federal government’s decision, taken without prior public debate, opened the way to “an accumulation of weapons that not only will not strengthen Germany’s security, but, on the contrary, will put it at serious risk,” said representatives of concludes the parliamentary group of the left party.

In short, the authors of the initiative call for the cancellation of the bilateral agreement between Germany and the United States on the deployment of intermediate-range missiles, as well as a diplomatic initiative to conclude a global treaty on intermediate-range nuclear forces.

“We made it absolutely clear: no US medium-range missiles on German soil.” — the president of the parliamentary group of the Left party commented on the resolution Soren Pellman.

As the deputy highlighted, the fact that the Bundestag has not discussed plans for the deployment of American weapons is a “scandal.” The parliamentarian also recalled that, according to the results of a recent sociological survey, almost half of Germans (50%) oppose this measure, pointing out the risk of a further escalation of tensions, while in eastern Germany the proportion of those who disagree with the missile deployment reaches 79%.

The initiative is expected to have the support of the parliamentary group of Sarah Wagenknecht’s Union for Reason and Justice party, as well as the Alternative for Germany faction.
