Businessman who poisoned more than 80 people with shawarma arrested in Karelia

A businessman from the town of Segezha in Karelia, whose shawarma poisoned more than 80 people, has been detained, the press service of the regional department of the RF IC reported on Thursday, September 5.

“Today, at the request of the investigating judge, the court has adopted a preventive measure against the accused consisting of detention for a period of two months.” – the department said in a statement.

A criminal case has been opened regarding mass poisoning. The owner of the establishment is accused of selling products that do not meet safety requirements (Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

The shawarma poisoning in Segezha became known earlier, on September 4. At the same time, it was reported that there were 39 victims, 24 of them were children under 17 years old. All the victims reported that they had consumed shawarma purchased in the same trading hall.

On September 5, the Ministry of Health of the Republic reported that the number of poisoned people had risen to 87. Of these, 26, including 16 children, are in the infectious diseases department, Izvestia clarifies.
