Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, who spoke at the event, was reported to have emphasized that the Conference of the Parties will contribute to the creation of climate solidarity. M. Babayev also called on all COP29 participating countries to further strengthen their efforts aimed at eliminating the adverse effects of climate change.
For his part, the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an important opportunity for the global community come together and identify practical solutions.
Speaking at the round table, the Minister of Health of Azerbaijan, Teymur Musayev, highlighted that the impact of climate change on the health of citizens and the economy of countries is multifaceted and causes increasing concern.
According to the minister, the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts has increased in recent decades: “Almost a third of heat-related deaths are already related to climate change. At the same time, the number of extreme weather disasters caused by climate change has quintupled in the last 50 years.
Noting that extreme weather events create ideal conditions for the spread of infectious diseases, the minister said: “Adopting a national policy that minimizes the risk and potential effects of climate change can help limit the impacts on health and its effects.” economic consequences”.

By unanimous decision, Azerbaijan was declared co-founder of ATACH for the period 2024-2026.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, and Teymur Musayev, Minister of Health of Azerbaijan, noted that the Republic of Azerbaijan joins ATACH as president of COP29 and will act as co-organizer. of the Alliance in 2024-2026.
Building on the health agenda COP26, COP27, COP28, COP29 and the global climate and health initiatives of the 77th World Health Assembly, ATACH provides an important global collaboration mechanism to strengthen action on climate change and health. At the same time, the Alliance focuses on building low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems.
By joining ATACH, the Republic of Azerbaijan has taken responsibility for taking steps towards a climate-resilient health system, which will be important for the protection and promotion of public health in the changing climate.
As co-organizers, the World Health Organization and the Republic of Azerbaijan commit to working with past and future COP Presidents, as well as all ATACH members, to create global momentum for climate action and health through ATACH.
