Can Barnier’s government escape the National Assembly’s censure? Try our simulator

After seven weeks of consultations and hesitation, Emmanuel Macron has appointed Michel Barnier, a 73-year-old republican, to the post of prime minister.

“The new popular front [NFP] “He will censure a new government, whoever it may be, if he considers that the policy it pursues is unjust and does not respond to the needs of the French people.”Lucie Castets, candidate of the left coalition for Matignon, reacted immediately to the Midpart.

The National Rally (RN) does not consider an automatic motion of censure, but assures, through the voice of its president, Jordan Bardella, that “judge[a] on documents his general policy speech ».

The National Assembly is divided into three blocs and lacks an absolute majority following the legislative elections last July. The NFP cannot work alone to overthrow a government. Several parliamentary groups must agree to vote together on the motion of censure. One possible scenario would assume that the PFN and the RN approve a single text. Adding all their votes together results in a total of 319 votes, enough to censure the government.

But many other scenarios are possible. With our simulator you try to create the absolute majority (289 votes) necessary to overthrow the new government. You can count the political groups as a whole, but also consider, to complicate the puzzle, that certain deputies decide not to vote according to their own group. To do this, simply change the number of deputies shown to the right of each political party.

During the last legislative period, the RN voted nine times for the motions of censure of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (NUPES, the equivalent of the PFN), which had tabled 26, as well as for the two texts presented by the Liberté, Independents, Overseas and Territories Group (LIOT). On the other hand, NUPES had not voted for any of the seven motions presented by the RN.
