The debate, which is analyzed in this episode of the decoded EU, is the quarter of 27 countries to maintain its leadership position in climate policy and at the same time remain reliable economic power.

Thanks to his climatic legislation, the EU promised to become neutral by the middle of the century, with an intermediate purpose to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels until 2030. Crossing a revision of the EU Executive Director.

Review also includes an offer in which the EU countries will be able to participate in the international carbon market to compensate for part of their pollution.

“In fact, the EU member state can pay the third country outside the EU to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases,” said EURONEWS journalist Gregoar Lori. “Non -governmental organizations claim that this is nonsense, because it contradicts a scientific point of view.”

It also allows other forms of flexibility.

“One of them is the removal of carbon, which can be based on nature or industrial technologies. And, therefore, NGOs argue that these removal technologies are not developed enough to use on a large scale, ”said Lori. The other is “the flexibility between the sectors, so that the areas that are preceded by abbreviations can compensate for those who are behind.”

“We cannot give a decision on the climatic crisis on our own”

However, an attempt to speed up the review through the European parliament failed.

“The European folk party (in the center) of the European People’s Party blocked a revision,” said the European folk party, ”said Euronews Mep Lena Silling (Austria). “Now we, together with Social Democrats and liberals, must convince the European People’s Party, and this is exactly what we are trying to do, work together and write another report, other amendments.”

But these are not only lawmakers that are divided. France President Emmanuel Macron asked the commission to postpone his proposal in June, claiming that it takes more time to achieve a European compromise that will not weaken the reduction in the international competitiveness of the block.

According to Silling, the attitude of Macron “will significantly affect negotiations at the next conference of the parties”, which will be held in November in Brazil.

“We consistently argue that Europe cannot give a solution only for the climatic crisis. We need China. We need the USA. We need other countries. We need India. And at the same time, shortly before we announce national deposits, we try to escape.

Nevertheless, the appeal with the climate change, by the same, came to the list of priorities of the commission. In his proposal last month on a budget of 2 trillion euros for the period 2028-2034, the emphasis was on competitiveness, security and protection.
