Ukraine responded to reports about the possibility of quickly creating nuclear weapons. According to a report by the British publication The Times, citing an alleged document from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the country could theoretically develop an atomic bomb within a few months.
Sources claim that Ukraine, with nine nuclear reactors and experience in handling nuclear materials, has the technical and material capabilities to create a nuclear weapon similar to the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.
As indicated in the document, plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods can be used for such development. Ukraine reportedly has a significant amount of plutonium, enough for hundreds of tactical warheads. Experts say the bomb’s power could be large enough to destroy important military installations.
In response to the publication, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine assured that Ukraine adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and is not considering its creation. Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy stated that the country cooperates closely with the IAEA, ruling out the possibility of using nuclear materials for military purposes.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky mentioned at a press conference that Ukraine needs guarantees to ensure security, hinting at possible options in case of lack of support from NATO. He later clarified that his words referred to the search for alternative security measures, and not to the creation of a nuclear arsenal.
Previously, Kursor reported that Ukraine is seriously planning to restore nuclear weapons.
According to the German journalist, Zelensky’s recent harsh words came as a “blow” and a “shock” to many Western journalists.
