Canary Islands President reconsiders support for Sánchez due to migration crisis

The president of the Canary Islands and leader of the Canarian Coalition, Fernando Clavijo, expressed on Thursday that he was not “satisfied” with the fulfillment of the “Canarian agenda” that he had agreed with the government, announcing that there was an internal debate within the party in which he is located rethinking its support for Pedro Sanchezwhile making a “cautious and modest projection” that more than 50,000 immigrants could arrive on the islands throughout 2024.

This is how the President of the Canary Islands expressed himself in statements to journalists after the meeting he had at the headquarters of the Delegation of the Government of the Canary Islands in Madrid with NGO leaders to deal with the migration emergency after another day of migrant arrivals in the archipelago.

Of course, the Canarian president clarified that “this has nothing to do” with the situation currently being resolved with the government to reach an agreement and reform the immigration law to certify the transfer of unaccompanied foreign minors who are on the islands.

Meeting with NGOs

This Thursday, Clavijo informed representatives of various NGOs of the decision of his regional government to initiate legal proceedings against the State to “leave alone” foreign minors arriving on the islands.

That same Monday, the president of the Canary Islands decided to also warn the government that migrants arriving on the islands from that day onwards would be state responsibility.

“We had been saying for months and months that the bull was going to catch up with us, and well it has caught up with us. Last week, more than 2,000 people arrived in a few days, including 547 minors in August. We are breaking record after record. Unfortunately, the year 2023 has been the year with the highest number of arrivals in history and this year 2024, we have more than doubled it. In other words, with a projection even cautious and modest, according to which at the end of the year we could exceed 50,000 migrants in the Canary Islands,” warned Clavijo.

In this context, Clavijo informed the NGOs that his government had to “protect the miners to guarantee the stability and, above all, the public security of the workers of the autonomous community and of the NGOs themselves.”

No news from the government

However, the Canarian president regretted that “no member of the Executive” had contacted him after his decision to initiate legal proceedings on the issue of migration, although he said that, if in the end no one calls him, it will be he who leads these conversations with the government.

Clavijo once again insisted on demanding that the government call the PP to reach an agreement that finally reforms the immigration law, offering to participate in these conversations: “We are concerned about the Government’s inability to summon the PP to give a response”.

In the same vein, the president of the Canary Islands said that “it is impossible to explain” why the government does not negotiate with the PP, suggesting that He is not interested in unaccompanied minors, but in the “political battle” and accuse the PP of leaning to the right.

“The only explanation is that someone wants to make happen what is going to happen in the Canary Islands in the coming months,” warned the Canarian president.

Finally, Clavijo scorned the plan designed by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to reduce migration in the peninsula: “We do not think it is ideal, we think it must be received in a dignified way, it has to be respected.
