This is the world’s unique graffiti lighthouse

You won’t find lighthouse graffiti anywhere else in the world. The decoration of this lighthouse is spectacular and has certain elements that go hand in hand and that could end up being the ones that mark a before and after. This urban art is incredible and is located in a very special place in Spain.

This is how it is presented on the City Council’s website: “The lighthouse is located in Cabo de Ajo, the northernmost geographical point of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria. From this place, you can enjoy impressive views, to the east the mouth of the Ría de Ajo, to the west the Cabo de Quintres, another of the outcrops of the municipality as well as the Bay of Santander and in the background to the south, the Cantabrian Mountains. It was on this square, at its end, that the construction of the lighthouse was planned in 1907. The works included an eighteen-metre high tower and a two-storey house in which up to six lighthouse keepers could live. Two years later, its construction was approved, but when the Cabo Mayor lighthouse in Santander was put into service, the Ajo lighthouse project was cancelled as it was considered unnecessary. Years later, after three shipwrecks in the area, the Ajo Lighthouse project was approved again in 1921, finally inaugurated in 1930 with a building with quite modest characteristics compared to the initial plan, to which a single-family house is attached. It was years later, in 1962, when the incandescent lamp was electrified, thus maintaining the style and characteristics of before. Is in 1980 by engineer Fernando Rodríguez Pérez when a new circular concrete tower was planned just 50 meters from the old location, putting into service in 1985 what is now the current lighthouse. In recent years and to stimulate municipal tourism, modifications and improvements have been made in the area of the lighthouse. In 2015, the surroundings were equipped with a perimeter fence and pedestrian paths for visitors to walk around, opening the doors since that year and welcoming a large number of tourists and visitors to the area.

You can organize a getaway to this place, taking into account its opening hours, which are as follows and which you should note now:

  • Opening hours from June 15 to September 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Rest of the year: Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, regional and national holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
