Cascajosa avoids evaluating the government’s “decree” on RTVE: “It doesn’t suit me”

Concepción Cascajosa, interim president of RTVE, appeared this Tuesday before the Joint Parliamentary Control Commission of the public entity of the Senate. In this intervention, he declared that “It’s not up to me to take stock” on the recent approval by the Government of a royal decree aimed at modifying the parliamentary majorities necessary to elect the members of the Board of Directors of public television, which are increased from 10 to 15.

In other words, if until now the Congress elected six members and the Senate four, with the new decree the Lower House elects 11 and the Upper House four. The Government thus opens the door to its partners -PNV, Junts, ERC, Bildu, Podemos and BNG-, escapes the absolute majority of the PP in the Senate and still ensures control of RTVE.

Thus, the 15 members of the Council will be elected by a two-thirds majority during the first vote and will include a release formula. In case there is no quorum They will be elected by absolute majority in a second vote.

The president requested a modification of the regulations of the Board of Directors: “A in-depth reform and this is one of the first tasks that the new Council must assume.

More specifically, he emphasized that “A change would be necessary, such as telematic voting.”

October 25 strike

Concerning the strike called last Friday October 25, he explained that “beyond the precise reasons, the important thing is to know the comments which were posted on social networks that day, where many people were precarious situation.

Thus, he emphasized that “if “We are losing these young professionals, we are also losing their desire to work and their enthusiasm.”

Concerning the leak of RTVE opposition questions on September 29, he described the incident as “very serious”. And he recalled that his job was to postpone the examination and seek the assistance of a lawyer.

Likewise, he stressed that “it was obvious that this was a matter that had to be handled at police level and that that same evening a disciplinary file had already been filed against a worker and that all the actions that occurred during the investigation were documented.” “Of course, he insisted that “This is a work in progress that can still be greatly improved.“.

To conclude his appearance, Cascajosa asked for “respect for RTVE professionals” and praised “their work, essential for the development of democracy”.
