Castilla y León’s new law against gender-based violence will “strengthen protection” and integrate more forms of aggression

The new law on gender violence in Castilla y León will “strengthen the protection” of victims and integrate new forms of this type of aggression, such as the so-called digital or indirect violence. It will also focus on “vulnerable” disabled women who suffer from this scourge and on “fight against sexual assault.

For now, the text is a draft law developed by the regional government which will take its first steps tomorrow when it is sent to the Advisory Council and the Council hopes that in the “first days” of 2025 can be registered with the Cortes de Castilla y León.

This was announced this Monday, the day of commemoration of the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the President of the Regional Executive, Alfonso Fernández Mañuecowho inaugurated the crisis center for victims of sexual assault in Salamanca.

“We want the new law to bring progress aimed at strengthen protection victims”, he explained, and that new forms of violence are envisaged, such as which is carried out thanks to new technologies “which is silent and at the same time very dangerous”; the indirect, that which is directed “cowardly” against the children or relatives of the victims and also that of “second order” this is what is exercised “against those who support” women who suffer abuse.

Crisis centers

So-called crisis centers for the care of victims of sexual assault will be part of this new legislation. The one in Salamanca opened its doors this Monday and in “the next few days” Those from the rest of the provinces will do so, Mañueco said.

As the leader of the Regional Executive explains, these are resources that will be “accessible” – they will open up the 24 hours a day, 365 days a year-, “safe” and will provide “immediate care” and “coordinated” with the rest of the resources and institutions that care for victims, such as municipal councils, central government, state security forces and agencies or local police.

They will be managed by the social groupss who are responsible for care in these situations. In the case of Salamanca, it will be the Plaza Mayor women’s aid association which will be in charge and all are financed by Next Generation European funds.

Its function will be to provide a “psychological” care and “support”, who can provide “legal and social advice”, but also “Support for family members and loved ones” that “often they do not know how to act and react in situations of this nature”. They will therefore also be essential in supporting the “environment” in order to be able to contribute to the “recovery” of victims.

In addition to the nine crisis centers, the opening of which was demanded by the central government before the end of this year, the Atiendo virtual center has been operating for “several months” to reach “the entire territory”.
