The agreement between the PSC and the ERC for the investiture of Salvador Illa as president of the Generalitat of Catalonia has sparked rejection from the right, but also a debate among the socialists, with some criticising it and many others not being clear about its scope and meaning.
But both the result of the Catalan elections with the great victory of the PSC with the investiture of Illa and the agreements reached with the ERC and the Communes must be understood as part of the strategy of the PSOE and the government to overcome the conflict of processthe most serious problem of Spanish democracy in recent decades, to convince a large majority of Catalan citizens that it is possible and positive to feel the dual identity of Catalans and Spaniards and to promote a new adequacy of Catalonia in Spain. We live in a time of short memory and we no longer remember, or at least we pretend, what happened between 2015 and 2017 in Catalonia, even since 2012, how an independence process was triggered, including a declaration by the Catalan Parliament, and how a movement evolved towards independence. This is a very important and very active part of Catalan citizenship.
