CCOO and UGT call for 6 days of strike in road transport and threaten indefinite strike at Christmas

Road transport returns to general strike. The CCOO and UGT unions called strikes by workers in this sector on October 28; November 11, 28 and 29 and December 5 and 9.

Furthermore, union groups warn: if their demands are not taken into account, there will be a “unlimited strike” from December 23. That is, in the middle of Christmas.

The unions specify that drivers of road transport of goods, whether light or heavy, are called to strike; road passenger transport and urban public transport, i.e. the public bus.

The cause? According to the unions, the “systematic blocking” of the advancement of the retirement age of the professional group of drivers.

The Spanish legal system provides for the possibility of advancing the retirement age through partial retirement and the mechanism for reducing coefficients due to activity. However, Workers in the transport sector denounce that these formulas are not effective in their sector.

The application of reducing coefficients for heavy goods vehicle drivers had already been requested in 2011 – the legislation prior to the reform of the social security law being carried out in 2022.

CCOO and UGT recall that the government had to develop the social security law through regulations to establish the procedures for requesting the application of reducing coefficients that could be applied to this profession, but “there were two years of blockage” .
