Ceasefire in Lebanon: UK issues statement

Britain has called for an end to fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, saying a ceasefire is key to ensuring the safety of civilians in both Lebanon and northern Israel.

This was reported by The Times Of Israel.

According to the Prime Minister’s press secretary Keir Starmer, achieving long-term sustainable peace in the Middle East requires all parties to the conflict to join forces in this direction.

The situation on the border between Israel and Lebanon remains tense since October 8, 2023. Hezbollah militants carry out almost daily attacks on Israeli military posts and settlements along the border.

Representatives of this group claim that their actions are aimed at supporting Palestinian Arabs in the Gaza Strip, where the conflict began to escalate after the Hamas attack on October 7.

The United Kingdom considers that the ceasefire is not only a step towards stabilizing the situation, but also a necessary condition for the protection of civilians in the conflict zone.

Previously, Cursor wrote that the IDF took up positions in the Litan River area.

The Israeli military reported the successful destruction of dozens of Hezbollah targets during operations in two key areas of Lebanon. In the Wadi Saluki area, an Israeli commando brigade carried out a raid against terrorist positions, where large arsenals of weapons, dozens of bunkers and rocket launchers ready to be launched were discovered and destroyed.

Units from the Alexandroni Brigade, the 769th Hiram Brigade, the Golani Brigade reconnaissance unit and the Israeli Air Force’s elite Shaldag unit operating near the Litani River also participated in the operation.

Fighting with Hezbollah militants led to the destruction of large numbers of rocket launchers and weapons depots camouflaged on mountain slopes. The Israeli advance towards the Litani River is of strategic importance, as the region has traditionally served as a defense line to limit Hezbollah activity in southern Lebanon. The Litani River is located just four kilometers from the Israeli city of Metula and Wadi Saluki is ten kilometers from the Israeli border.

The proposed ceasefire, which is likely to be accepted by Israel, is expected to halt the fighting for two months. During this time, Israeli troops plan to withdraw their forces from Lebanon and Hezbollah will have to cease its armed presence south of the Litani River.
