Cepsa, pioneer in the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the Canary Islands

Cepsa It already has sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Canary Islands. Currently, the energy company can supply SAF permanently in the Tenerife North and Gran Canaria Airportsand in the coming weeks it will extend its availability to the main airports of the archipelago. This biofuel manages to reduce aircraft emissions by up to 90% throughout its life cycle, compared to conventional kerosene.

The Canary Islands airports join five other major airports in which the energy company markets this sustainable fuel: Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Seville.

Álvaro Macarro, Director of Sustainable Aviation at Cepsa, said: “We are making progress in our commitment to decarbonize the aviation sector and in our firm commitment to guaranteeing an energy supply to the islands that is increasingly low in CO2 emissions. “We are proud to contribute to increasingly sustainable aviation and tourism in this region.”

Cepsa, one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of aviation fuels in the Spanish market, produces this sustainable fuel in its energy park in La Rábida (Huelva) from used cooking oils, thus promoting the circular economy.

Furthermore, to guarantee the supply of SAF to its customers, Cepsa is developing, in collaboration with Bio-Oils, the largest second-generation biofuel production complex in southern Europewhich will have a production capacity of one million tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel. With this project, the company is moving forward with the objective of being leader in the production of 2G biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual production capacity in 2030 of 2.5 million tons of biofuels, of which 800,000 tons will come from SAF, a quantity sufficient to fly over the planet 2000 times.

The new milestone reached by the energy sector in the Canary Islands supports several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda: SDG 7 (Affordable and non-polluting energy), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 12 ( Responsible energy production and consumption) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
