Cepsa Química advances in the field of biodegradable detergents with a smaller footprint

Cepsa Química has just launched its NextLab Low Carbon product in Europe and Asia to reduce emissions from your factory during the production process thanks to use of renewable energy instead of conventional fossil fuels.

This process, a pioneer in the chemical sector, allows us to obtain a product with the same characteristics, qualities, properties and performances as traditional LAB, but with lower greenhouse gas emissions and, therefore, more environmentally friendly.

Concretely, according to the results of the comparison of the carbon footprint of the products promoted by the company and on a basis from cradle to door (from the origin of the raw material to the moment the product leaves the factory), the greenhouse gas emission of NextLab Low Carbon is 19% lower than that of LAB made with fossil energy.

America, Europe and Asia

For the first time in 2023, Cepsa Química manufactured NextLab Low Carbon in its factory in Canada to supply the American market. Now the company will start manufacturing this product for European and Asian markets from its factory in Puente Mayorga (Cádiz).

This facility is one of the largest in the world in the chemical industry and has been the first factory in the world to adopt innovative Detal technology.

Flex 2-phenyl, which increases plant efficiency and safety while improving its sustainability, reduce environmental impact and optimization of LAB production.

Accelerate decarbonization

According to Carlos Molina, director of the Surfactants activity, the production of NextLab Low Carbon for the European and Asian markets “means working even more closely with our customers and thus satisfying the needs of those looking for accelerate its decarbonization And produce detergents with less impact on the environment“.

It also means “one more step towards achieving Cepsa Química’s decarbonization goals.” These objectives are reflected in the Positive Motion strategy, with which we aim to develop a green and sustainable chemistryand this will allow us to achieve our Net Zero commitment in 2050,” adds Molna.

linear alkylbenzene

Cepsa Química is the world’s leading manufacturer of LAB (linear alkylbenzene), the product most used in the production of biodegradable detergentswith around 18% of world production.

More than 60% of biodegradable detergents on the market, both domestic and industrial, they use LAB in their formulations.

Its excellent properties, its effectiveness, as well as its transformability and compatibility with other compounds, make it a very useful element in the washing processboth in traditional products (detergent powder or bars) and in more sophisticated products (single-dose capsules or highly concentrated liquid detergents).

New certification system

Cepsa Química has developed a new certification system to map Scope 1*2 GHG emissions reductions and produce NextLab Low Carbon.

To date there was no external certification system recognized nationally and/or internationally in the production of chemicals with energy from renewable sources and conventional raw materials.

This new certificate is designed to ensure the traceability of sustainable production using renewable energies instead of conventional fossil fuels. The certification system and its corresponding registration are audited by a third party.

Renewable energies

In the case of the Cepsa Química Puente Mayorga factory, the traceability of sustainable production with renewable energies to reduce emissions from operations has been certified by AENOR.

Furthermore, although the system of certificate It was initially proposed for the production of Linear alkylbenzenecan be applied to other products and set standards for Home Care Industryencouraging companies to launch new initiatives to reduce carbon emissions during the production process.

With the commercial launch of NextLab Low Carbon in Europe and Asia, Cepsa Chemical continues its commitment to making the home care industry more sustainable and contributing to the decarbonization of its business.
