The President of the Council of the European Union (EU), Charles Michel, expressed his hope that COP29 will be a conference of trust, tolerance and transition from words to action.
“Informe” reports that he said this during his speech at the COP29 Leaders Summit.
S. Michel emphasized that the destructive consequences of climate change are increasingly observed in the world. “Humanity has faced a climate crisis of this kind for the first time. It is humanity that bears responsibility for this crisis. Some associations are undoubtedly more responsible than others,” he said.
According to him, the basis for the implementation of the Paris Agreement must be the principle of cooperation: “We must show courage and solidarity. We can count on the European Union, which annually allocates 31 billion dollars within the framework of its financial obligations. We will support all countries, including the G7 countries and rapidly developing economies. We call on our colleagues to follow our example”, – said the President of the EU Council.
He also highlighted that the EU supports a multi-level approach in the fight against climate change. S. Michel called to mobilize international trade and development banks to achieve the set objectives.
“Despite pessimistic forecasts, we signed the Pact for the Future in New York a few weeks ago. I hope that this conference of the parties will be a conference of trust, tolerance and transition from words to actions,” he added.
