A fire broke out at a chemical plant in the western German city of Duisburg (North Rhine-Westphalia), and more than 100 firefighters are on the scene, the DPA reported today, 10 September.
The incident occurred in the zinc sulphate production sector. The cause of the emergency has not yet been established. This plant belongs to the Grillo consortium, which manufactures and supplies products, in particular, for the automotive and electrical industries. Grillo said that no injuries have been reported at this time.
Local media reported that a thick column of smoke was rising over the north of the city.
“We cannot now rule out that smoke may be harmful to health.” – reports the Duisburg administration.
Authorities called on citizens to close doors and windows, and turn off air conditioning and ventilation.
