Chinese experts call on the US to reconsider tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

As the United States prepares to announce final plans in the coming days to impose tariffs on imports of electric vehicles and other Chinese products, Chinese experts are calling on the US side to make a goodwill gesture as pragmatic economic and trade cooperation between the world’s two largest economies benefits the United States and the world at large, as reported by the Chinese newspaper Global Times today, August 31.

Experts said high tariffs by some Western countries will have limited impact on Chinese EVs in the long run as Chinese automakers have great potential to expand into other overseas markets, including BRICS countries and the Global South. They added that China has enough patience and resilience to overcome trade barriers imposed by some Western countries.

Following the recently concluded visit of the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan China’s Ministry of Commerce said Beijing and Washington agreed to hold a vice-ministerial meeting of the China-US Trade and Industry Working Group on Sept. 7 in Tianjin.

However, amid talks to stabilise relations, Reuters reported on Thursday that the top US trade representative is expected to announce final plans for Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, in the coming days.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai He strongly supported Canada’s 100% tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

The administration’s new tariff threat joe biden indicates that its environmental policies are flawed, he said lu xiangan American research scholar from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

“There are many businesses in the United States that oppose new tariffs on Chinese products because the administration’s disastrous move will hamper the transition to a green economy in the United States and around the world.” Liu said, calling on Washington to “make some kind of goodwill gesture.”

In June, Reuters reported that a group of 173 U.S. trade associations under the umbrella of Americans for Free Trade had asked U.S. lawmakers to hold hearings on the decision to impose higher tariffs on electric vehicles and other Chinese products.

“We hope that the United States can take a long-term view of its relationship with China. As two major countries, China and the United States should shoulder responsibility to the people and the world to find a mutually beneficial solution.” – saying Bao Jian YunDirector of the International Political Economy Research Center at Renmin University of China.
