Chinese students abroad urged not to be recruited by intelligence agencies

The Ministry of State Security (MSS) of the People’s Republic of China has warned students studying abroad about the danger of recruitment by foreign intelligence services. TASS reports this with reference to the department.

“The new academic year has begun, and many Chinese students are going abroad to continue their studies at foreign universities. At the same time, they are becoming the object of increased attention from foreign intelligence and espionage services. In this regard, national security authorities remind students, many of whom study abroad, to exercise greater vigilance and take precautions.” – says a statement posted on MGB’s WeChat page.

Young people are warned that when entering or leaving the country, prohibited items may be placed in their suitcases, after which, under the pretext of “breaking the law”, they will be blackmailed and forced to cooperate in exchange for being exempt from responsibility.

“It is best to check in your luggage again before crossing the border” — advises the ministry.

The agency also warns that foreign intelligence may attempt to uncover sensitive or classified information under the guise of “academic research” disguised as friendly exchanges and cooperation. Students are therefore advised to be wary of anyone seeking such information.

Chinese students are also warned against visiting places such as casinos and “illegal activities” that represent recruitment opportunities.

“It is necessary to strengthen self-discipline, lead a healthy and correct lifestyle, consciously resist unwanted temptations, and also exercise the necessary vigilance not to trust so-called acquaintances,” – instructs the Ministry of State Security of the People’s Republic of China.
