Chinese students are advised to be wary of attractive boys and girls

China’s top intelligence agency has warned students with access to sensitive data to be wary of attractive members of the opposite sex. They may pretend to have feelings to trick them into spying for foreign organisations, endangering national security.

REUTERS reports this.

China’s Ministry of State Security posted a warning on its WeChat public account today, September 4, to students who may be coerced into giving out important information in various ways.

He said state security agencies discovered that foreign intelligence and espionage officials were deliberately grooming young students and trying to infiltrate them into their ranks.

“They take advantage of young people’s great curiosity and willingness to try new things,” the statement said.

China is cracking down on threats to its national security. This year alone, they have issued several warnings to their citizens and cited examples of spying they could identify.

Students were told that foreign intelligence agents specifically targeted university students with access to classified and confidential research data, posing as university scientists, as well as employees of research institutes and consulting firms. They lure young people with “well-paid part-time job opportunities under the guise of market research and academic exchanges.”

The agency said that once students express interest, they are provided with so-called free training and communication via social media, phone or video conferencing.

The agency also warned that foreign intelligence agents may even put on “the mask of handsome boys and beautiful, approachable and attentive women, luring young students into the trap of love through false feelings.”
