Chiva mayor fears ‘hundreds of dead’ trapped in cars swept away by floods

The mayor of the Valencian city of chiva issued a worrying warning after the deadly DANA devastated death and destruction the Levant. He fears that in his town there will be “hundreds of deaths” trapped in cars swept away by deadly floods.

The city of Chiva is one of the most affected by the disaster that devastated the province of Valencia. The mayor of this municipality, Amparo Fort, urgently demanded this Friday that they be supplied with drinking water, that they repair an electrical fault that affects the population and that they bring groceries for the neighbors, including baby food, starter milk and diapers. The population is in a critical situation and no help is reaching them.

Fort explained that they also needed a medical ambulance and pointed out that, although at the moment they have recorded ten deaths, they expect “hundreds” because they have only been able to concentrate on the urban area and the municipal area is very large and there are “hundreds of cars” overturned on the highway and “there are surely people inside”.

He also reported that they had to evacuate four buildings due to the threat of collapse and did not exclude that there were others, and regretted the “looting” and thefts in the factories that are suffering .

Fort assured that they “are in urgent need of water and provisions” because “there are already neighbors on the street who are slapping themselves to get them”, and detailed that the Solana well, which supplies the municipality with drinking water, suffers from an electrical fault and does not work.

One of the neighbors also attests at street level to the desperate situation in which the residents of Chiva find themselves. “There is no water, no electricity, no gas, we barely have telephone coverage to get information and the supermarkets are out of stock. It’s horrible,” says Begoña Navarro.

Last Tuesday, this city broke a historic record for water accumulation, 491 liters per square meter in eight hours, which can fall in a full year, which caused the overflow of the ravine that crosses the urban area.
