Chronicle of West Azerbaijan: Aghkend and Aghgol: traces of Turkish history

Within the framework of the West Azerbaijan Chronicle project, a plot titled “Aghkend renamed Agnjazor and Ashotavan”, written by journalist Asgar Ibrahimov, was prepared on Baku TV.

Today’s plot tells about the toponyms Agkend, Aggol and Aggol hydronyms, which were subjected to the “terror of name change” by the Armenians.

It was reported that the place names of West Azerbaijan throughout history became the target of Armenian vandalism, the history of its towns, the deportation of its population and the name change process continued in sequence.

Agkend was a village in the territory of Gafan district of Zangezur district and was abolished at the beginning of the 20th century.

Aghkend – From 1831 to 1916, only Azerbaijanis lived in the village located in Keshishkend, Daraleyaz district, now Yegegnadzor district. In 1918, the villagers were expelled due to Armenian aggression. Armenians were moved here in 1923-1925. Azerbaijanis were also forcibly relocated in 1948-1949. On July 3, 1968 the name was changed to Agnjazor.

Aghkend: Azerbaijanis lived in the village located in Sisyan district of Zangezur district until 1828. In the years 1828-1829, Armenians who had been transferred from the Iranian provinces of Khoy and Salmas, and Azerbaijanis settled in this village They were deported from their historical-ethnic lands. On 17 April 1948, the name was changed to Ashotavan.

Aggol is the name of a village and a lake in the Gafan district of Zangezur district. The name of the town is taken from the lake of the same name that is located in the area. It is a complex hydronym formed by adding the geographical name of the lake to the word “white”, meaning “quality, drinkable”, and is mentioned in Armenian sources as Berandzov, i.e. lake of the mouth.

Aghgol is the name of a lake and a reserve in Chobankara village of Masis district, eponymous district of Zangibasar district. In 1939-1940, between the village of Chobankara and the city of Echmiadzin, the lake was drained due to the construction of the IV state farm and the reserve was abolished.

In the end it was highlighted that the historical facts about the names and origin of place names of the ancient Turkic-Oghuz origin of Western Azerbaijan, the bitter fate of these places are never forgotten – the traces of Azerbaijan that the “place name thieves” could not destroy, although the names have been changed several times, the truths do not change. The truth is that Western Azerbaijan is an ancient Turkic-Oghuz homeland and lives in hearts.”

In general, the study and dissemination of toponyms, oichonyms, oronyms and hydronyms belonging to Western Azerbaijan is a reality today and has great meaning and importance for future generations who will be owners of our native land. Because they reflect the history, ethnography and geography of the local population. With the plot prepared, the history and etymology of the place names of Western Azerbaijan modified by the Armenians are investigated, as well as information about the origin, meaning and subsequent fate of the place names.

It should be remembered that the goal of the Western Azerbaijan Chronicle project is to preserve and popularize the name of our historical and ancient lands, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, place names that existed in those territories, but their names have been erased, countless examples of underground and surface material culture are revealed: ancient settlements, necropolises, mounds, remains of castles, palaces and fortifications, caravansaries, bridges, funerary chests, tombstones, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches, mosques, pyres and hearths . , and facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are communicated to the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century shows once again that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and towns are of Azerbaijani origin and we know very well that Azerbaijanis on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history people have lived. Now the main task is “to make it known to the world community”, it is the promotion of the duties arising from the Concept of Return developed by the West Azerbaijan Community according to their opinion. .

Furthermore, it aims to illuminate the thoughts of historians and researchers about Western Azerbaijan and the life history of the people who were deported.
