Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan: History and Etymology of Toponyms Modified by Armenians

Within the framework of the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project, a story entitled “History and Etymology of Western Azerbaijani Toponyms Modified by Armenians” was prepared on Baku TV, written by journalist Asgar Ibrahimov.

Oku.Az It is reported that in today’s plot the toponyms Aghdaban, Aghdamlar, Aghdash, Aghdara, Aghadaresi, as well as the oronyms Aghdag, Aghdan, which were subjected to the “name change terror”, were discussed.

It is reported that Armenians who came to the South Caucasus since the Middle Ages first wrote fake history books and described themselves as indigenous inhabitants of this region and changed existing toponyms.

Aghdaban was a village in Sisyan district of Zangezur district. It is located on the right bank of the Bazarchay.

Aghdag is the name of a mountain in Kesishkend, i.e. Yeghegnadzor district of Deraleyaz district. This mountain with a height of 1,897 meters is based on the ancient Turkic word “ağ” meaning “high, tall”.

Agdamlar was a village in Gamarli, i.e. Artashat district of Garnibasar district. In 1897, 39 Azerbaijanis lived here. At the beginning of the 20th century, as a result of Armenian aggression, Azerbaijanis were deported and the village was abolished.

Agdan is the name of a river in Karvansaray village of Shamshaddil district, i.e. Agdan village of Ijevan district, and it flows into the Aghstafa river.

Agdash is the name of a village in Allahverdi i.e. Tumanyan district of Loru district. The village was destroyed in the 19th century and its population was moved to the villages of Akhtala and Shamlig. Now it is a ruined village.

Aghdara was a village in Keshishkend, i.e. the Yegegnadzor district of the Deraleyaz district. In 1831, 78 people lived there, in 1897, three Azerbaijanis, and it was abolished at the end of the 19th century.

Agadaresi is the name of a village in Eller, i.e. Kotayk/Abovyan district of Kirkhbulag district. In 1905-1906 Azerbaijanis were deported from their historical-ethnic lands. In 1946 the name of the village was changed to Katnakhpyur, i.e. Milk Spring.

In the end, it was highlighted that there are countless toponyms invented by the Hays to create a fictional story:

“Of course, Armenians who engage in lying and choose it as a profession forget that lies happen, but they do not work. Because in the current conditions, the real truth will prevail and the historical geographical and toponymic past of Western Azerbaijan will be restored.”

In general, the study and dissemination of toponyms, oiconyms, oronyms and hydronyms belonging to Western Azerbaijan is a reality of today and has great significance and importance for future generations who will own our native land. Because they reflect the history, ethnography and geography of the local population. The prepared arguments examine the history and etymology of Western Azerbaijani toponyms modified by Armenians, as well as provide information on the origin, meaning and further fate of place names.

It should be recalled that the aim of the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project is to preserve and popularize the name of our historical and ancient lands, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, toponyms that existed in those territories, but their names have been erased, countless examples of underground and surface material culture are revealed: ancient settlements, necropolises, mounds, remains of castles, palaces and fortifications, caravansaries, bridges, burial chests, tombstones, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches, mosques, pyres and hearths, and facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are brought to the attention of the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century once again shows that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and villages are of Azerbaijani origin and we know very well that Azerbaijani people have lived on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history. Now the main task is to “make it known to the world community”, it is the promotion of the duties arising from the Concept of Return developed by the Western Azerbaijani Community according to its opinion.

It also aims to enlighten the thoughts of historians and researchers about West Azerbaijan and the life stories of people who were deported.
