Dozens of people were reportedly injured as a result of the roof collapse.
Rescuers found two bodies at the scene. President Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“It is with deep sadness that I received the news of the death of two people. The condition of some of the injured is serious. I offer my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. It is a tragedy,” the head of state wrote on his social media account.
It should be noted that when the incident occurred, around 70 people were inside the building buying their monthly food baskets.
Lieutenant Governor Priscilla Krause said about 20 people were injured in the destruction. All of them received medical treatment. Clearing the area of debris is continuing. Preliminary information indicates there are no survivors under the rubble.
