CIMA of the University of Navarra celebrates 20 years of research to cure diseases

He Best University of Navarra celebrate 20 years of biomedical research serving the patient. Two decades of commitment to disruptive ideas that guide the development of advanced therapies for diseases widespread and rare.

Inaugurated on September 28, 2004 by the then princes of Asturias, D. Felipe and D. Letizia, the research center of the University Clinic of Navarre was born with the aim of research to cure, initially in 4 specific areas: oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases and gene therapy and hepatology.

“THE contribution from 15 companiesthrough an unprecedented research and technology transfer contract, enabled the launch of Cima. Currently our funding It is based on three pillars: competitive national and international projects, agreements with businesses and philanthropy. This source of income allows us to advance our goal of achieving translational science of excellence, directing our scientific projects towards the real needs of the patient,” explains José Andrés Gómez Cantero, general director of Cima.

Currently, more than 400 professionals from 18 countries develop innovative projects in the fields of cancer, DNA and RNA medicine and technological innovation. As its scientific director, Dr. Antonio Pineda-Lucena, explains, “in the Cancer Space, integrated into the Clínica Universidad de Navarra Cancer Center, we study the mechanisms involved in the development of solid and hematological tumors. Likewise, we seek to improve treatment options and quality of life for patients, through new combinations of immunotherapy and intratumoral radiotherapy. On the other hand, in the field of DNA and RNA, we focus our efforts on the search for genetic information to treat rare oncological and neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, in the area of technological innovation, we integrate cutting-edge tools that allow us to approach therapeutic solutions from an innovative perspective, through tissue engineering, computer models and quantitative biology.

40 active patents and 6 spin-offs

Since 2004 the High generated more than 130 inventions, which gave birth to 40 active patents.

Furthermore, the science developed by research teams gave birth to 6 spin-offs, newly created companies focused on gene therapy for Wilson’s disease and the Parkinson’s diseasestrategies for treatment of bleeding, cancer immunotherapy And advanced cell therapies for hematological disorders.

Cima is part of IdiSNA, the Health Research Institute of Navarraand other multicenter consortia and actively collaborates with other research centers. In addition, it has signed strategic alliances with international reference centers such as the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
