Citizens of the United States, Canada and European countries were sentenced to death in the Congo for attempting a coup.

The military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Central Africa) sentenced three American citizens and several Europeans to death for attempting a coup d’état.

As Reuters reports, the attempt to violently overthrow the government took place in May this year. Gunmen, including Americans, then seized the presidential office in Kinshasa.

The court charged the participants in the coup attempt with terrorism, criminal conspiracy and other crimes. In total, 37 people were sentenced to death, including citizens of Great Britain, Canada and Belgium.

In total, some 50 people appeared before the court. The sentence was read out to the accused on the grounds of the Ndolo military prison in the capital, Kinshasa.

As reported EADailyOn May 19, a coup in the Congo was foiled. The plotters attempted to enter the presidential palace Felix Tshisekedibut were neutralized by special forces. It was later learned that their leader Christian Malanga was killed by security forces.

The rebel group’s leaders and their accomplices have also been sentenced to death previously, most of them in absentia.
