Civil Guard investigates bank scam linked to online betting

THE Civil Guard of Navarre has opened an investigation into an offense of bank fraud, in which the fraudulent use of a bank card to make online bets was reported.

The events occurred between June and July 2024, affecting a resident of Navarre who had been the subject of fraudulent charges for a total amount of 770 euros.

The victim, who had already been scammed in January 2024, did not cancel his bank card, possibly allowing the criminals to access his card data. At the end of June 2024, the the complainant detected several charges on his card in the concept of a reputable online betting house, for a total amount of 770 euros.

What is curious about this affair is that the alleged perpetrators, by winning bets, they did not change the linked payment methodThe complainant therefore received three deposits on his card in the amount of 130, 400 and 200 euros, totaling 730 euros, as “bet payment”.

After becoming aware of the situation, the complainant blocked his bank card and filed the corresponding complaint. Offices of the Citizen Service of the Civil Guard of Pamplona. Finally, he went to his bank, which reimbursed him for the 770 euros fraudulently withdrawn and kept the 730 euros which corresponded to the profits from the bets made by the alleged perpetrators.

The Civil Guard continues the investigation into this matter, collecting evidence and conducting negotiations with banking entities and the Parisian house to clarify the facts and locate those responsible for the scam.

What to do if we are victims of bank card fraud

If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of fraud and someone steals or duplicates your card, there are three basic steps you need to follow:

Cancel the card: They must do this immediately, as soon as they discover the incident, whether due to loss, theft or because they detect a suspicious transaction that they did not make or authorize.

Report the facts: If your card has been stolen or used by a third party, you must report it immediately after canceling it. Not only will it serve to clarify the case, but the report will be essential for any type of claim or recovery of the cheated money.

Claim the refund: In fact, filing a complaint is the third step to follow in the event of bank card fraud. Once they cancel the card and file the corresponding complaint, they can request the return of the stolen money.
