The heavy rains that affected the Valencian Community last night will move this Wednesday towards Catalonia. The Civil Protection service of the Generalitat activated the flood risk alert this evening in several Catalan regions and asked people to stay away from torrents and flood zones.
The highest risk is in the Terres de l’Ebre regions, such as Terra Alta, Montsià and Baix Ebre, where the accumulated rain threshold of 100 liters per square meter in 24 hours can be exceeded.
This Wednesday, other regions of Tarragona, Barcelona and part of central Catalonia could exceed the precipitation threshold of 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes, according to forecasts from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC).
Civil Protection called for “extreme precautions” when it comes to mobility and outdoor activities in these areas, and requested that streams, ravines, torrents or any areas prone to flooding not be crossed where it is raining or where there is already an accumulation of water.
Rescue services also asked people to move away from coasts and places where waves break strongly such as breakwaters or sidewalks.
Showers will be accompanied locally by thunderstorms, and some violent weather phenomena cannot be ruled out. The alert was also issued due to high waves expected on the south coast and part of the central coast.
Forecasts indicate that waves could exceed 4 meters in the Baix Camp, Baix Ebre and Montsià regions and 2.5 meters in Tarragonès, Baix Penedès, Garraf, Baix Llobregat and Barcelona. There will be an easterly component swell.
