classification of neighborhoods according to the number of crimes

When moving to any neighborhood, it’s normal to look, in addition to the property or house itself, at what the area is like. From the various services such as access to public transport and their connections with other areas of the city, supermarkets, local shops, health centers or schools, but also from the prism of tranquility and security.

Generally speaking, Spain is a safe country and so is its capital, Madrid. Nevertheless, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior of the Autonomous Communities, in 2022 the highest values of the crime rate corresponded to the Balearic Islands (63.4), Catalonia (60.6) and Community of Madrid (59.2). The crime rate is measured by the number of criminal offenses per 1,000 inhabitants. With these figures it is necessary to take into account that the larger the population – as is the case of Madrid – the greater the risk of suffering an accident. This can also be transferred to neighborhoods, because where there is a greater concentration of people, more crimes such as thefts or robberies can occur. However, the same relationship cannot be established in terms of violent crime since other factors come into play here.

In September, the delegate of the Sánchez Government in Madrid, Francisco Martín, presented the assessment of crime in the Community of Madrid and assured that evolves “in the right line”. In the first six months of the year it increased by 0.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, with a reduction in conventional crime of 0.9% and an increase in cybercrime of 5.7%.

The most dangerous neighborhoods in Madrid

For its part, Madrid City Hall presents the actions carried out by the municipal police on its statistical portal. The latest available data is from August 2024. The data are divided into actions related to people, property, weapon possession, drug possession and drug use. By adding these values, it is possible to know where the most actions took place during the eighth month of the year. The balance also includes the number of prisoners:

Thus, according to data from the Municipal Police, the highest number of arrests during the month of August was made in the Centro neighborhood, followed by Puente de Vallecas, Carabanchel and Ciudad Lineal.

Regarding the data, it must be taken into account, on the one hand, that it corresponds to the month of August, weeks in which many citizens leave the city. On the other hand, neighborhoods like the Center, which concentrate a greater number of Madrid residents and tourists, tend to benefit from a greater number of police interventions.

According to the central figures, it must be taken into account that most of the times when the municipal police had to intervene, they did so through property offenses (711 out of 769 total actions). Likewise, crimes linked to the possession of weapons – of which it is not specified whether they are white weapons or firearms – record very low figures in all districts. The greatest number of these interventions is recorded in Puente de Vallecas with six, followed by Chamberí and Vicálvaro (four each), Latina, Carabanchel and Usera (three each). The rest of the districts record two, one or no weapons-related actions.

In calculation, these represent 38 in the entire city. The most numerous interventions – also taking into account all districts – concern property (925), drug possession (294) and people (193). Likewise, the police do not specify which crime was most frequent in each district of Madrid. However, globally The largest number of people arrested or investigated relate to road safety-related offences.followed by minor begging, gender-based violence and injuries.
