Clavijo and Feijóo meet today in Tenerife to strengthen their ties in the reform of the immigration law

Today, Tuesday in Tenerife, the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will meet in a meeting that aims to serve as a A ‘decisive push’ to reform immigration law and that unaccompanied migrant minors may be referred on a mandatory basis.

This was expressed by the spokesman for the Canary Islands government, Alfonso Cabello, who described it as “good news” because it gives the Executive the “possibility” of transferring “first hand” the main party in Congress and which manages the majority of votes. the autonomous communities “as is the case in the Canary Islands.” Cabello hopes that “the solutions“to put ourselves at the “center of the debate” and ensure that the reform of the immigration law, which is the “only way” that the Executive of the Canaries manages, obtains the approval of 308 deputies in the Lower House.

Among the issues on the table, Cabello stressed that they are still “pending” for the central government to set the minor quota that each autonomous community can accommodate, one of the requests that the PP supports to support the text, accompanied by the authorization of sufficient economic resources, the immigration emergency declaration to be able to conclude contracts and hold a conference of presidents to explain management to the autonomous communities.

For now, he acknowledged that there was “no reaction” from the State Executive to Clavijo’s proposal to sit down to negotiate with PP and Junts to definitively conclude the agreement.

Cabello insisted that the 50 million earmarked for the costs of caring for unaccompanied migrant minors they are not enough and demanded that the Council of Ministers approve this Tuesday a position of 150 million euros, especially since this year “zero euros” were received for assistance to minors, so the need for funds is “immediate”.

“This doesn’t seem the most appropriate”

Regarding the proposals of the Ministry of Defense regarding the El Cristo and Polvorín de Tabares barracks, two facilities located in La Laguna, Alfonso Cabello said that “it does not seem the most appropriate”, given that both buildings are not in a condition to house “with dignity” anyone.

At the same time, he explained that the central government “misses the debate” because “it is not about continuing to open centers” but rather about guaranteeing their rights and inclusion and this implies “working in a stable and structured way” through the reform of the law. “There are already 81 centers, what is the maximum number? On which island?”, he asked.
