Clavijo calls on Spain and the European Union to “act decisively” after the migrant tragedy of El Hierro

Fernando ClavijoPresident of the Canary Islands, asked the government and the European Union to act after the tragedy of El Hierro which has caused, at present, the death of nine people. Maritime Rescue is searching for 48 missing people including This could be the islands’ biggest migration tragedy.

On the social network ‘X’, Clavijo spoke about the El Hierro event, in which only 27 of the occupants survived of a canoe which capsized as it was about to be rescued seven kilometers from the coast: “We need Spain and the EU to act decisively in the face of a structural humanitarian plot”.

“They are children, women and men. “Lives dying just a few meters from the southern border of Europe”shared the Canary Islands president while emphasizing the danger of the so-called Canary Islands Route.

For his part, Candelaria Delgado, Minister of Social Protection, Equality, Youth, Children and Family of the Government of the Canary Islands, admitted “not having words to describe the new tragedy experienced in El Hierro”.

According to him, the State and European institutions must articulate the necessary mechanisms to put an end to these journeys and also provide safe migration routes. “No one can remain impassive faced with the death of people fleeing poverty and war, for lack of horizons to seek a better future for themselves and their families,” said the advisor.

Alfonso Cabello, spokesperson for the Canary Islands government, also spoke. In his own words, he also calls for structural responses from the European Union and the Spanish government: “This leads us to a very complex humanitarian situation and drama.”

Torres: “Immigration is a humanitarian tragedy”

The Executive’s response was expressed in the words of Ángel Víctor Torres, Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory. The government member indicated that what happened in El Hierro shows that Immigration is “a humanitarian drama”.

“These people get on a boat and a canoe to try have a chance in your life. Unfortunately, many lose them,” Torres said before a meeting of the Canary Islands PSOE.

In this sense, he believes that what happened should raise awareness among those who want to build “walls in the sea” and “those who try to separate people based on the color of their skin.” “Just like the Canarians of the middle of the last century, we had to leave our land to seek prosperity in America, “Now other Africans are doing it, seeking the same thing in Europe.”he concludes.
