The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has dishonored the Spanish Government which did not previously inform the Canary Islands on the intention to open two centers for migrants in Tenerife and Fuerteventura with an investment of 7.4 million.
“I missed a call from a ministry, a little to talk,” he emphasized since they discovered the center of Granadilla thanks to the request that must be processed by the Port Authority. He regretted that, despite his meeting yesterday with the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, did not communicate anything about this and they learned about it thanks to the agreements of the Council of Ministers.
The Canarian president insisted that “They are people, not objects.» and asked that “there be communication, that we talk about it, that we say it” even though these are “subjects as sensitive” as this one. He also requested information on the number of places available and “under what conditions”.
In this sense, he advanced that he would try to contact Minister Torres this Wednesday to see “if he has the information”, and otherwise, with the Minister of Migration, Elma Sáiz, to analyze “what they are considering” and “what are the forecasts” of the Spanish government regarding the arrival of migrants to the Canary Islands.
In the case of Fuerteventura, the central government understands that it is necessary to provide the island with a temporary reception center for foreigners (CATE) with a capacity of 600 people and with regard to Tenerife, the current capacity of Adeje’s CATE is “insufficient”. “It is therefore necessary to allow new modular facilities with an approximate capacity of 350 people which will be located on Ministry of the Interior land.
Likewise, the Government is committed to “strengthening, improving and expanding” the services and supplies of CATEs on the islands of Lanzarote, El Hierro and Gran Canaria.
