Climber dies, four injured in landslide in Italian Alps

A mountaineer has died during a landslide on Mount Castor in the Italian Alps, as confirmed by rescue teams who arrived on the scene in the middle of the storm. In addition to the deceased, Four other people were injured.

As reported by Servico Alpino Valdostano (SAV), the planned operation began once received an emergency call of a group of eight climbers who claimed to have been victims of an avalanche.

Rescuers, after monitoring the scene, said the incident was caused by a snow cornice breaking off. According to them, this caused “the passage of the mountaineers themselves”.

SAV workers managed to save four climbers who were transferred at the municipal hospital of Aosta. Three others were brought before the Financial Guard, the border police, to clarify what happened.

Rescue, by land

The event occurred at at about 3,900 meters above sea level in the Cástor mountain rangebelonging to the Monte Rosa massif near the border with Switzerland.

Rescue workers had to intervene by land because the weather conditions made it difficult Air assistance not possible due to strong gusts of wind.
