President Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has been involved in a police investigation into sexual assault allegations in 2017, CNN reports.
According to the report, Hegseth was involved in an investigation into an alleged assault that occurred in October 2017 at a hotel in Monterey, California, during a conference hosted by the California Federation of Republican Women.
Hegseth, a Fox News host and Minnesota National Guard veteran, spoke at that conference.
CNN reported that police did not name Hegseth as the alleged attacker but said he was involved in the investigation. Additionally, the Monterey Police Department said it would not release the full text of the police report or comment further on the investigation, in accordance with California public records law.
Trump communications director Stephen Cheung told CNN in response that Hegseth “strongly denies all allegations and no charges have been filed.”
The report on Hegseth comes as Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, sparked public controversy over his investigation of Gaetz for child sex trafficking.
