A 53 year old woman will be compensated nearly a million euros after becoming paraplegic following medical negligence that occurred while she was being treated at the Santa Bárbara Hospital in Soria.
The victim, represented by the De la Riva y Pastor Abogados law firm, suffered serious damage following six unnecessary lumbar punctures, carried out without providing adequate information on the risks, according to the judgment.
The aforementioned judgment, although not final and subject to appeal to the Supreme Court, exposes “alarming facts” about the medical care received by the person concerned, who, after suffering serious health problems due to medical malpractice, decided to report the case.
During the legal proceedings, the public administration denied the facts and requested that the trial be dismissed. Likewise, it was found that the aforementioned organization He also did not provide the patient’s medical history.
From hospital to hospital
The patient went to Santa Bárbara Hospital, in Soria, where up to six lumbar punctures were performed. These interventions were carried out even though the pharmacological treatment prescribed on the same day was incompatible with this type of evidence, according to what sources from the law firm that assisted the victim told Europa Press.
These punctures earned him a hematoma which ultimately resulted in the woman’s paraplegia. After this procedure, the patient began to feel intense pain and weakness in her legs, before being transferred to Burgos Hospital, where she underwent an operation and remained hospitalized for almost a month .
Subsequently, she was sent to the National Paraplegic Hospital in Toledo, where she received specialized treatment for almost six months.
The judgment not only recognizes compensation for damages (including the provision of an electric wheelchair necessary for the patient due to the orography of her locality), but also underlines the vital importance of guaranteeing at all times adequate and transparent medical care.
