THE Christmas Lottery has its roots in 1812, in the full context of the War of Independence. Due to the serious economic crisis plaguing the country, the government found a way to raise funds for public coffers without directly burdening citizens. This is how the Modern Lottery was born, founded by Ciriaco González Carvajal, Minister of the Council of the Indies.
The first drawing took place on December 18 of the same year in Cádiz, with tickets of 40 reals and a first prize of 8,000 pesos, which was awarded to the number 03604. Although this was the beginning of the Christmas Lottery we know today, in this first draw there were still no drums or wooden balls that would be used later.
Since then, the draw has evolved considerably. In 1813, just one year after its creation, the wooden ballsmarking a first significant change. In 1892, the raffle officially adopted the name “Christmas Raffle”, although it was not included on tickets until 1897.
