Consumers call for labeling products from “illegally” occupied territories by Israel as Palestinian products

The Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Bustinduyasked all companies to import products from the Palestinian territories “illegally” occupied by Israel since 1967 to label them “appropriately” so that they “clearly reflect” the “origin and provenance” of it.

This was stated to the press a few minutes before his participation in the institutional event of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The minister explained all the details of this guideline with which his office intends to “guarantee” that consumers “can exercise their right to truthful information in all their purchasing decisions“.

In this context, Bustinduy recalled that “only a few months ago”, the International Court of Justice “ratified” in an opinion the position of the European Union and Spain on this issue and “urged all States to do, in their commercial relations, whatever is necessary to prevent this reality from being perpetuated”, while stressing that Spain had requested “on several occasions” the suspension of the trade agreement with Israel for “the clause on human rights violations“.

After that, Bustinduy He defended that, while the European Union moves forward and “adopts” it, the “objective” of his department is that “all consumers in Spain can have this information” for their purchasing decisions, if they wish it.ensure that they do not contribute to the maintenance of this illegal situation of occupation and the ongoing genocide in Palestine“.

Asked about products and companies imported from illegally occupied areas, the minister avoided giving names and did not detail which products come from there.

Likewise, he stressed that the regulations “are very clear” and that “all operators and economic agents must respect them”, because, if this is not the case, “The ministry will not hesitate to exercise its power of sanction“.
