The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) begins today in Azerbaijan.
Oku.Az informs that the decision on holding COP29 in Azerbaijan was made at the COP28 plenary session held on December 11.
This year’s events of the Conference of the Parties in Azerbaijan, which has extensive experience in organizing international events, will take place from November 11 to 22.
The COP29 Presidency has announced global initiatives within the Action Agenda. The initiatives launched by the President aim to promote climate action, encourage the active participation of non-Party stakeholders and raise ambition and drive action on climate change.
The first day of the event, November 11, will be the official opening ceremony of COP29. On November 12 and 13, the Climate Action Presentation by World Leaders will take place.
United Nations Framework on Climate Change Some 80 heads of State and Government of the States parties to the convention will make official statements at the high-level segment of the Summit of World Leaders on Climate Action to be held in Baku from 12 to 13 November within the framework of COP29 .
The speeches of the heads of State and Government will continue on November 13.
Please note that the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has been held every year since 1995. The main objective of this event is to assess progress in combating climate change in the world. Since the mid-1990s, within the framework of the aforementioned conference, the Kyoto Protocol was discussed, which contains mandatory legal obligations related to the limitation of greenhouse gas emissions in developed countries. In the sessions held in 2011-2015, the Paris Agreement, considered the most important international document in the fight against climate change, was discussed and adopted in 2015. To date, 195 countries have joined this agreement, including Azerbaijan.
