The municipal councils of ValencePomegranates, Cordoba and Jaén demanded that the central government address “once and for all” the reform of the local financing system to achieve “fair financing” and demanded “the paralysis of the Catalan quota”.
The mayor of Valencia, Maria Jose Catalareceived this Wednesday at the Town Hall the Mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo, the Mayor of Córdoba, Jose Maria Bellidoand the mayor of Jaén, Agustín González, as well as the president of the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, Rocio Cortés.
The mayors affirmed that this reform of local financing must be carried out “at the same time as the reform of regional financing”. “The first measure to be adopted is a modification of the law of Local domainsso that local financing is calculated on gross revenues from state collection. This is the only way so that local funding is not reduced by the concessions made to the separatists,” they stressed.
Likewise, the mayors agreed that the reform of local financing is “imperative, and even more so with the intention of the Government to approve the Catalan quota, which will mean a decrease financial situation of the municipalities”, they denounced.
For his part, Catalá announced that, if the Catalan quota materializes and becomes law, the Valencia City Council will raise its challenge before the Constitutional Court through a conflict in defense of local autonomy.
“It is not a question of confronting anyone, but of defending a funding suitable for all municipalities since the Catalan quota will lead to the breakdown of the common territorial solidarity fund and the municipalities will lose economic resources,” he argued.
In this sense, he declared that it was necessary to “stop” the Catalan quota. “We will go where necessary because the municipalities will keep the crumbs of the financing. This is nonsense and an attack on municipalism», concluded the municipal elected officials.
Equality of conditions
For his part, the mayor of Córdoba, José María Bellido, defended the need to “have decent financing, that neighbors deserve to be on an equal footing with autonomous communities“, while assuring that “the town hall and the neighbors cannot be the ones who pay this Catalan share which takes from the single fund what belongs to all”.
For her part, the mayor of GrenadeMarifrán Carazo, highlighted the importance of defending the quality of life in cities and the provision of public services to residents.
“We are deeply concerned by the issue of the Catalan quota because it represents an additional problem difficulty that municipalities have when it comes to providing services on an equal footing with the rest of municipalities throughout the country. “We defend equality between neighbors and between territories,” he declared.
Finally, the mayor of JaénAgustín González, declared that “the quality of life Citizenship implies fair funding, which must be comparable for all citizens.
