The COVID-19 pandemic has not only fundamentally changed the lives of people on Earth, but has also affected our planet’s natural satellite: the Moon.
Oku.Azreferring to “Oxford Academic”, the authors of the unexpected discovery are scientists from the Ahmedabad Physical Research Laboratory.
Researchers hypothesize that the cause of this surprising phenomenon may be a decrease in radiation emitted by Earth as a result of a sharp decrease in human activity during the quarantine period. They recalled that during that period most of the world’s industrial companies stopped operating, the use of transportation was extremely limited and mass events were cancelled, and they emphasized that this affects the radiation level of our planet.
“The Moon experienced a quarantine effect visualized as an anomalous drop in lunar surface temperature at night during this period, likely due to COVID-19,” the study authors note.
The scientists indicated that they will continue studying this phenomenon to better understand the mechanisms of interaction between two celestial bodies.
