His case is one of the last mysteries to reach the courts after the approval of what is known as Trans lawThe standard, approved in March 2023 and which aims to eradicate situations of discrimination based on sexual orientation, has generated strong controversy over some of its points, such as the recognition of gender self-determination as the only condition for changing sex in the Civil Registry from the age of 16.
This is a situation that feminist groups have highlighted as gateway to fraud. The last case under scrutiny is the one that leaves Cristina perplexed in Seville. He doesn’t understand what happened to Candi, with whom he shares two children, but he believes in any case that it’s a joke. To her and to the system.
“He makes fun of me and of Justice. He always gets what he wants. I’ve known him for many years and I know what he’s capable of,” he warned.
Cristina’s story, legally recognized in 2019 as a victim of abuse by her partner of 12 years, took a bizarre turn last July, when she went to a police station to report a new assault by the man she believed to still be Cándido.
But while she goes through the procedures to file the complaint, the officers inform Cristina: Cándido is now Candi. Her new identity was registered in the summer of 2023 and, for all intents and purposes, she is a woman. In other words, the police could not be governed by the law of Gender violence in the face of Cristina’s request. They couldn’t stop Candi.
Perplexity
Cristina’s surprise didn’t stop there. The same day he went to the police station, his ex did the same. The reason? Report Cristina for assault. Cristina’s lawyer, José Antonio Sires, is convinced that Candi’s entire strategy responds to “a defense mechanism to make her more psychological damage to the victim and delay the procedure as much as possible.”
